Plaid skirt, white blouse, black heels, and the shoe that keeps threatening to fall is the only thing anyone watches.
Elvira sits on a grey couch in a school-style outfit – white button-up and red plaid mini skirt – with black strappy stiletto heels on her small feet. She crosses her legs, and the dangling begins. The top heel slides forward, catches on her French-tipped toes, swings once, twice, then settles back. At EU 37 (US 7) and 5’8″, the proportions work – long bare legs between the short skirt and the high heels, and nearly ten minutes of crossing, uncrossing, and letting shoes hang.
The strappy heels are thin-banded and minimal, leaving most of her foot exposed. When the shoe dangles, you can see the arch of her foot above the heel cup, the tendons on the top flexing to keep the shoe from dropping. The French pedicure catches light at the open toe, and the combination of plaid fabric and black patent leather creates a visual tension between school uniform and grown-up shoes.
The shoe change comes partway through. Elvira slips out of the heels and goes barefoot, her wrinkled soles pressing against the wooden floor. The transition from structured heel to bare foot is immediate and stark – suddenly the arches relax, the toes spread, and the clean French tips sit on the floor instead of inside a strap.
The couch is grey and modern, with a knitted throw draped over one side. A low shelf with books sits behind her. Elvira’s blonde hair falls past her shoulders, and the plaid skirt rides high on her crossed legs. The outfit does what it was chosen to do – draw the eye down to the shoes and the feet inside them.
Ten minutes of plaid and patent leather. The dangling never stops being the thing you watch.
